dundon, somerset and bloomsbury, london
To hang above the kitchen bench in the Dundon Passivhaus we wanted a light fitting that would cast a strong, even light over the worktop, without being too bulky or intrusive in the space. There are a few suspended aluminium strip lights on the market, but they feel too light-weight and the aluminium would not have anything to do with the tones of the other materials in the room. We designed and made a fitting made from solid 6mm brass plates with an LED strip light source in between that hangs from the ceiling on stainless steel cables. The brass tones beautifully with the oak linings of the room and the thickness of the metal plates gives it a satisfying weight in contrast to the thinness of the suspension cables.
We developed the design further to incorporate an up-light and a down-light for the kitchen island in the Bloomsbury Town House. We also designed a wall light fitting for the same kitchen, fixed at eye level at the top of a tile splashback to light the work surface below. By commissioning bespoke fittings our clients have lighting that integrates with the bronze finish of the Bulthaup units near-by and is designed specifically for their particular space.
